What is a medium dark roast coffee?

As you’d expect, a medium dark roast coffee is the bridge between the two levels or roasting. Common flavors that arise with medium dark roasts include dark chocolate, nuts like pecans and hazelnut, caramel, and warm baking spices (think cinnamon and nutmeg). A medium dark roast isn’t smoky like a full dark roast, but there are hints of that woodsy aroma. Many will use this kind of roast for espresso shots, along with lattes, drip coffee and more.

Haunted Harvest is carefully roasted to that medium dark profile to highlight the notes of rich brown sugar, roasted hazelnut, and subtle plum brightness. If you want to get close to a dark roast, but are still avoiding that fully smoked flavor, this is a great compromise.

How much caffeine is in medium dark roast coffee?

Despite some misconceptions, the caffeine difference between light, medium, medium dark, and dark roast is minimal. Light roast coffee often contains the most caffeine, because it’s actually more dense than medium dark roast. Coffee beans dry out as you roast them, so you lose some of that density and weight. According to Peet’s Coffee, a standard 8-ounce cup of coffee contains approximately 95 mg of caffeine.

Our Haunted Harvest medium dark roast blend will deliver the balanced energy that coffee lovers expect while giving you a slightly smoky and flavorful drinking experience.

How should I store coffee beans?

According to the National Coffee Association, storing roasted coffee beans at room temperature maintains their flavor for about 1-3 weeks. To maintain this shelf life for coffee beans, make sure you store them in a cold, dry place, and keep them out of direct sunlight. Even storing them in an opaque container (versus a transparent container) can help block that damaging sunlight. Do not pre-grind them; grind them right before you brew your coffee. Remember, coffee doesn’t “go bad” (unless it grows mold), but it will lose its flavor.

How should I grind my coffee beans?

This depends on what kind of coffee you’re making! To keep it simple, a coarse grind is good for French press and cold brew; a medium, or all purpose, grind is great for pour-over coffee, drip coffee, and your home coffee maker; and a very fine grind is usually for espresso. If you start from our Haunted Harvest whole bean, the possibilities are endless.
